Professional treatment starts with careful assessment. The child's needs, his internal pain and his conflicts must be carefully understood in a deep way. The context of the family and the school must also be carefully considered. With the above knowledge and understanding, effective methods of intervention can be chosen that are fit this unique child. Working with parents is also very important.
What types of therapies do I typically use? For grade school children I usually use psycho-dynamic play therapy, while informing work with the parents on Family Systems theory. For preschool children I have received special training in dyadic therapy that includes both child and parents. I typically apply cognitive and behavioral principle to my work, but refer to other therapist children who need CBT to be the primary approach.
